Are you unhappy with being a Used instead of a User on Facebook? Are you you bored with the echo chamber of journalists and trolls on Twitter?
In this talk, NYACC member Brendan Kidwell will introduce free software and free services you can use to make friends and share ideas, which aren’t controlled by Silicon Valley surveillance / advertising companies. We will discuss the ActivityPub federated network, powered by software Mastodon and Pleroma. We will also cover IRC and some other lesser known systems. Finally, we’ll go over some personal strategies you can use to stay secure, happy, entertained, and informed while avoiding social networking rage.
